Ivan Sofronovich Piatnitski

Ivan Sofronovich Piatnitski (1895 — 1976) was the younger brother of my 2nd great-grandfather Vasiliy Sofronovich Piatnitski and son of Sofron Piatnitski. He was born in 1895 in our family's ancestral village of Dorosino (historically Slutsk Uyezd of Minsk Governorate, now Lyuban District of Belarus).

During the interwar decades, Ivan Sofronovich moved to Moscow, where he mastered mechanical trades as a certified machinist and driver. He resided with his family in Moscow near Taganka (Bolshiye Kamenshchiki St., house 3, apt. 2). During the Great Patriotic War, he worked at an essential defense facility — Armored Tank Repair Plant No. 2 (B.T.R.Z. No. 2), repairing combat tanks and armored vehicles for the front, and held an official occupational draft deferment.

In the spring of 1944, at the age of 49, Ivan Sofronovich was released from his occupational deferment by mutual agreement. On March 16, 1944, he passed a military medical examination ("fit for active field service as a driver"), and on March 18, 1944, he was mobilized by the Baumansky District Military Commissariat of Moscow and dispatched through the Moscow transit assembly point directly to the frontlines.

Red Army soldier Ivan Sofronovich Piatnitski saw frontline combat in the ranks of the 275th Rifle Regiment of the 117th Rifle Poznań Red Banner Order of Suvorov Division (69th Army, 1st Belorussian Front). For courage and bravery displayed in action against Nazi forces, Red Army private Ivan Safronovich Piatnitski was awarded the Medal "For Courage" by unit order No. 40/n of the 275th Rifle Regiment dated June 8, 1945. On July 24, 1945, he was demobilized under the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR for older soldiers. Following the war, he returned to peaceful civilian life in Moscow and passed away in 1976 at the age of 81.
